Spanning 205 hectares, the Himalayan Zoological Park in Gangtok is a sanctuary dedicated to preserving the region's diverse wildlife. Perched at an elevation of 1,780 meters, it affords breathtaking vistas of Mount Kanchenjunga. Delve into this captivating habitat, home to majestic creatures like the Himalayan Red Panda, Snow Leopard Cat, and Himalayan Black Bear, alongside a rich array of flora and fauna. As the inaugural zoo of Sikkim, the park holds a special place in conservation efforts.
Located just five kilometers from the main town, the Zong Dog Palri Fo-Brang Gompa (also known as Zang Dhok Palri Phodang) holds a special place in spiritual reverence, consecrated by the Dalai Lama. Commonly referred to as Durpin Monastery, it was constructed in the mid-1970s and boasts a magnificent prayer room adorned with intricate wall paintings and a rare mandala. A notable feature is the revered Kungiyar, a collection of Tibetan religious scriptures spanning 108 volumes, brought here by the Dalai Lama himself. Adding to its allure is the monastery's striking facade, showcasing traditional Buddhist architectural elegance, characterized by its simplicity and grandeur.
Nestled in Tashi, approximately 8 kilometers from Gangtok, Tashi Viewpoint presents an idyllic vantage point for beholding majestic mountains. Commissioned by the late Sikkimese monarch, Tashi Namgyal, this spot affords a sweeping panorama of the Kanchenjunga snow peaks, provided the skies are clear. Additionally, one can admire the Phodong Monastery and the Labrang Monastery set amidst verdant hills. Particularly enchanting during sunset, as the sun's rays cast hues of pink and orange upon the peaks, painting the sky in a mesmerizing palette. Surrounding the viewpoint, numerous local eateries beckon with tempting snacks.
Perched at an elevation of 12,400 feet, Changu Lake, also known as Tsomgo Lake, stands as one of Gangtok's premier tourist destinations. This oval-shaped lake spans a kilometer in length and sits 35 kilometers away from Gangtok. Esteemed by both Buddhists and Hindus, this sacred lake is nestled amidst towering snow-clad peaks, nourished by the adjacent melting ice. Visitors may be lucky enough to spot the Ruddy Shelduck, a migratory bird renowned for its vibrant orange and brown plumage. Stroll along the lakeside and marvel at the breathtaking vista of snow-capped mountains beneath a swiftly moving sky. Entry to Changu Lake requires permits for both Indian and foreign nationals, with the latter group also mandated to engage licensed guides. However, it's crucial to note that adverse weather conditions or unforeseen road closures due to landslides can affect accessibility. Thus, visitors are advised to plan accordingly and carry valid identification, along with four passport-size photographs, for permit application.
